The Slow Web

December 13th, 2008 2 comments

Real time metrics on web page ready for use, is something I would like to see as part of Firefox. I haven’t looked for a plugin recently. I would like to be able to see the following:

  • Amount of time page took to download
  • Amount of time page took in browser to get to DOM complete.

It seems I can always start tapping the desk waiting for pages to display. I have a fast network, Firebug is off, it happens on Windows, Mac, Firefox and IE.  I  have a very fast cable connection. Maybe it is me, and of course if you ever ask a typical support person, they start with, it must be your network connection. I have some work I did with Andreas on something called Internet Weather, common idea, to help with the first response. Some real time numbers would help so much in getting the problem addressed. I am no looking forward to writing in assembly code again, oh I meant C code.  I wonder if Firefox uses C++. It would be so nice to get away from IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari and get back to a Java based Browser.  AJAX would be so trivial and so much better in a Java Based browser.  I wonder if RMI in a browser predates AJAX?
